Shoutout to the small hardware store that actually helped me fix a leaky faucet instead of just selling me parts
Stopped at Ace Hardware on 5th Street last Saturday because my kitchen faucet was dripping like crazy. The guy behind the counter didn't just point me to the aisle. He asked me what brand, looked at a photo on my phone, then walked me through taking it apart and told me exactly which o-ring kit to grab. Total cost was $4.50. Then I went to a big box store later for something else and heard a customer asking the same question. The employee just waved at the plumbing aisle. Which one do you think actually solves problems?

Isn't the whole point of a big box store that they're cheaper and faster for people who already know what they need, rather than training staff to be free plumbers for everyone? That 4.50 fix probably cost Ace more in employee wages than they made from you.

Agree to disagree @alicec86, but I'd argue that free advice builds loyalty way better than a cheap price tag. That $4.50 sale turned me into a repeat customer who tells everyone about Ace, while the big box store just gets my money when I'm already shopping somewhere else.
