Stop giving me the fake smile and just tell me when my table is ready

Last Friday I walked into a chain restaurant outside Cleveland with my kid. There were maybe 4 open tables in sight. Hostess asks for my name and says, "We'll get you seated in a moment." Twenty minutes later I see two parties who came in after me get seated. I go up and ask again, same scripted response and that dead-eyed grin. I finally ask for the manager and she says they were waiting on a booth in the back that they use for parties of 2. But nobody told me that. Why do places hide the real wait or the actual reason? If the booth was being cleaned, just say "5 minutes for that spot" or offer a different table. Instead I got the runaround and left. I know it's not a huge deal but the fake politeness while not giving real info is worse than someone just being straight with me. Has anyone else had a host or cashier give that canned answer while you watch other people get helped first?
