Why do some restaurants act like they're doing you a favor by taking your order?

I went to this diner in Phoenix last week, not even during rush hour, like a Tuesday at 2pm. The waitress acted annoyed that I walked in. She tossed the menu on the table, took 10 minutes to come back, and then rolled her eyes when I asked for no pickles on my burger. The food came out cold and she never checked on me once. At the end, she dropped the check with a 'you can pay up front.' I left a 10 percent tip just to be petty and I still feel like that was too generous. Has anyone else had a server who clearly hated their job ruin a whole meal?

So did she give you that look like it was your fault she had to do her job, or was it more of a general "I hate my life" vibe? I always wonder if people like that realize they chose the job. Like nobody forced her to be a waitress.

Best move is to tip a little extra upfront when you sit down. Gets them to reframe the whole interaction. I do $5 on a $20 tab right when I order and watch the attitude flip. Wendy had a point about choosing the job but people get stuck. Sometimes they're dealing with stuff you can't see. A little cash up front cuts through the noise and you get better service.
