Appreciation post: My kid's school email got hacked last month

I got a weird text from my son's teacher asking why he was emailing her about gift cards. Turns out his school account password was just his birthday. I had to walk him through setting up 2FA on his school Gmail. Has anyone else had to deal with this with younger kids?

My daughter's school had the same issue last year. We ended up using a password manager to make a strong one for her.

Is a password manager really needed for a kid's school login? It feels like we're making simple things way too hard these days. It's just schoolwork, not bank info. Can't they just use a normal password and write it down somewhere safe?

How often does your kid actually need to reset that password you wrote down when the paper gets lost or the handwriting fades? Strong passwords are still the norm for school systems these days, and kids lose things like sticky notes all the time. A password manager just keeps that one login from turning into a weekly headache.
