Got hit with ransomware at a coffee shop in Austin and now I never use public WiFi without a VPN

Was working on client files at Jo's Coffee on South Congress last month and my laptop locked up with a ransom note demanding $800 in Bitcoin. Lost a whole day of work and had to wipe my drive clean. Now I run a VPN anytime I'm on a network I don't control. Anyone else got burned by a public hotspot?
