Got hit with ransomware at a coffee shop in Austin and now I never use public WiFi without a VPN
Was working on client files at Jo's Coffee on South Congress last month and my laptop locked up with a ransom note demanding $800 in Bitcoin. Lost a whole day of work and had to wipe my drive clean. Now I run a VPN anytime I'm on a network I don't control. Anyone else got burned by a public hotspot?

$800 in Bitcoin! I once paid $4 for a single hour of internet at an airport lounge and still got a virus. At least your story makes me feel slightly less dumb about my own public WiFi disasters.

Honestly, who even pays for airport wifi anymore? That's like paying for water at a restaurant. Ngl, your $4 virus story is rough though. Tbh, I'd rather lose $800 in crypto than deal with that kind of hassle.
