Hotel wifi at that conference in Columbus made me rethink public networks

Last week I was at a business event in Columbus and the hotel lobby wifi asked for my room number plus last name to connect. I know that's pretty common for big hotels, but it bugged me that anyone could just guess those details if they overheard someone checking in. I use a VPN on my phone anyway, but my laptop wasn't set up and I almost checked my bank account on that connection. Has anyone else walked into a hotel or coffee shop and just refused to use their network after seeing how login works?
