Picked a free antivirus over paid one for 2 years then got hit with ransomware
I was using Avast free for like 2 years on my home PC. Thought it was fine. Then last month a file got encrypted and they wanted $300 in Bitcoin. Paid $150 to a recovery service instead. My buddy uses Bitdefender paid and never had issues. I switched to the paid version after that. Anyone else learn the hard way about free security tools?

My buddy lost all his photos from a free AV setup too.

Oh man, you're making me wonder if this whole ransomware thing is as common as people make it out to be. I've been using the free version of AVG for years on my old laptop and never had a single issue, not even a popup. But maybe I've just been lucky and the clock is ticking for me too. Still, dropping $150 on a recovery service sounds like you might have overpaid for something that could've been avoided with a simple backup of your important files to an external drive.
