Switched from a free VPN to ProtonVPN and my connection speed doubled.
Used a free one for a year, thought it was fine. Then I tried ProtonVPN's free tier and got 85 Mbps instead of 40. The difference is they don't sell your data to pay for it. Anyone else find a secure free option that actually works?

The Windscribe free plan gives you 10GB a month which is actually usable for regular browsing (unlike those 500MB ones that are basically just for testing). I've been using it for about 6 months now and the speeds stay pretty consistent even during peak hours. The only catch is you have to use their ad blocker feature to get the full data allowance, but that's not really a downside in my book.

Tried Windscribe's free plan after a bad experience with a different service. It gave me solid speeds for basic browsing and streaming. Their free data limit is pretty generous too.

Yeah ben486, Windscribe's free tier is actually decent for what it is. A lot of other free services throttle you into the ground. Their speeds staying solid for streaming is a big plus. The data cap is way better than most, lets you actually use it for more than just checking email. Makes sense you'd switch after a bad run with another provider.
