TIL my router admin password was the factory one for 6 years, and a $0 fix changed my setup
For years I just plugged in the router from Comcast and never touched the settings, because I figured the default login was fine as long as my wifi password was strong. Then a coworker in Austin showed me how easy it is to scan for admin pages on a home network, and I found out mine still said admin/admin after 6 years. Now I log into 192.168.1.1 about once a month, change the password, and turn off remote management. Anyone know if the default SSID name actually matters, or is that just paranoia?
@margaretj40 the real problem is that default SSIDs are all in a public database, so anyone nearby can look yours up and see the router model and its known bugs. That list tells a stranger exactly which exploits to try before they even knock. Renaming it does not make you hacker proof, but it does take you off the easy target list.
