Update: got hit with a fake parking ticket text 3 weeks ago in Baltimore, almost paid it
Three weeks ago I got a text saying I owed $78 for a parking ticket in Baltimore, and I was about to click the link because I did park downtown that week. The tell was the link went to a site called balt-pay-portal.xyz instead of the actual city .gov page, and when I called the number on the real city website they said they never text people about tickets. How many of you have started double checking links before tapping them, or is it just me getting paranoid?
Good thing you caught that balt-pay-portal.xyz nonsense before your wallet got lighter. The scammers really went all in on the Baltimore angle too, like of course I parked there that week, that is exactly the setup they want. A real city site ends in .gov, period, and no legit parking office is texting you payment links out of nowhere. The part that gets me is how they know you were downtown at all, which makes me wonder if these guys are just blasting every area code and hoping for a hit. I check links now like I am defusing a bomb, and I am not even mad about being paranoid at this point. Did the real city folks say anything about whether you should report that number to them?
