Fixing a leaky faucet took me 4 trips to the hardware store
Thought it was just a worn washer. Nope. Then the stem was stripped. Then the seat needed a special tool. Ended up replacing the whole cartridge from a plumbing supply place in Tacoma. Has anyone else had a simple repair balloon into a weekend project?

Took me 4 trips to the hardware store" sounds about right. You probably needed the seat tool on the first go, not the third. Those things are cheap but nobody owns one until it's too late.
