Hit 300 dad jokes written down and realized my kids stopped laughing around number 87
I keep a little notebook in my mail bag and jot down jokes when they pop in my head, and last Tuesday I counted 300 of them written out. Sounds like a win, right? Here is the problem. I flipped back through the pages and around joke 87 my kids quit laughing at the dinner table, and I did not notice for almost a year. My son is 14 now, and when I tried one from page 12 last night he just said "good one, Dad" in this flat voice and went back to his phone. That fake laugh stung more than a real groan ever did. So I started asking them why, and my daughter admitted the jokes were fine, I just kept telling them the same way, same pause, same wink after the punchline. I have been doing standup for an audience of two for a decade and never changed the act. Now I am trying to figure out if the jokes got old or if I did, and how to tell the difference. Any of you out there had a kid go cold on your material, and did you switch things up or just accept the silence?
