My dad told me 'never trust a recipe that calls for margarine' and I laughed until my butter-free birthday cake collapsed into a sad puddle last week.

He was 100% right, the whole thing turned into a greasy mess and now I'm wondering what other cooking advice from the 1970s I should actually listen to, has anyone else been burned by old-school kitchen wisdom like that?

Well, I had a friend who tried to make her grandmother's famous pound cake using that old trick of "adding an extra egg for moisture" and it came out more like a dense, rubbery frisbee than anything edible. Really makes you wonder which of those old tips are actually gold and which ones are just sitting there waiting to ruin your dinner.

That extra egg thing always sounded smart until you said this.
