Used to always interrupt my kid's stories until my wife pointed it out

I thought I was being helpful by jumping in with advice or finishing his sentences when he took a pause. My wife told me straight up, "He's not asking for a solution, he just wants you to listen." That hit me hard because I realized I was treating conversations like I do orders in the kitchen, just efficient and fast. I started just nodding and asking "then what happened?" instead of jumping in, and now my son actually talks to me longer. Has anyone else had to unlearn a habit like that after someone called them out?

Is this really that complex though? Kids need to learn that not everyone is going to silently nod at everything they say.

Fair point @hollym82, but honestly it's just about listening to your kid for a few extra minutes. Not that deep.
