Can we talk about how I froze at the grocery store self checkout over a $4 difference?
Yesterday at the Kroger on High Street I had 2 carts worth of stuff and the self checkout screen asked if I wanted to round up for the food bank. I stood there for a good 30 seconds doing math in my head about whether rounding up 4 bucks was better than just buying a couple extra cans on sale. A woman behind me finally said 'hon, just hit yes or no, we're all waiting' and I hit no and felt like a jerk the whole drive home. Now I keep going back and forth on whether I should have just paid the 4 dollars or stuck with my rule of only giving stuff I pick out myself. Does anyone else get weirdly stuck on those checkout donation prompts or is it just me?
Man, come on, you really think hitting no made you a jerk? That lady behind you was the rude one (30 seconds is nothing, people scroll their phones for way longer than that at checkout). The round up thing is a trap anyway, stores use your four bucks to look good and then take the tax write off for themselves. You gotta remember Kroger is a billion dollar company, they don't need your four dollars, and half those round up programs don't even send the money where you think. Your rule of picking out your own cans is way better because you actually know what you're giving and who gets it. So no, you did nothing wrong, the only mistake was letting some stranger rush you into a choice you weren't ready to make.
