Debate: Is it really worth rotating tires every 5,000 miles?
So I was reading through my car manual last week and found a stat that surprised me. It said rotating your tires on a front-wheel-drive car every 5,000 miles only adds about 4,000 miles of life total over a set. I checked it against a study from a mechanic blog called TireRack and they basically agreed. Most people I talk to swear by strict rotation schedules, but I think it's overkill unless you're driving a performance car. Am I missing something or does this feel like a waste of time and money for normal commuters?

Holding off on rotations is exactly why you see front tires bald at 20k miles and rear tires still look new... then you gotta buy four instead of two. A buddy of mine skipped rotations on his Civic for 15,000 miles and ended up with a pull to the right that wore out his steering rack bushings early. TireRack's own tests show uneven wear patterns get worse fast once you let them go past 7,000 miles. The 4,000 extra miles claim probably assumes perfect driving on clean roads, but real world potholes and gravel kill that math. Rotations cost like 20 bucks at most quick lube places, which is way cheaper than replacing a mismatched pair of tires every 18 months...

Read a study from Consumer Reports a while back that said skipping rotations cuts tire life by about 15% on average. That's basically throwing away a free tire over the life of the set. Also saw a mechanic on YouTube show how a tiny imbalance from uneven wear can mess with your suspension alignment over time, like your buddy's Civic. So that $20 rotation saves you from bigger headaches down the road.
