That Tuesday I locked my keys in the truck at the dog park
Last Tuesday I drove to the dog park in Austin like normal, let my lab out, and somehow managed to shut the door with the keys still on the seat. I stood there for ten minutes watching my dog run circles while I called my wife, who laughed for a solid minute before saying she could bring the spare but it would take forty minutes. Then a guy with a greyhound pulled up and asked if I needed help, and he popped the lock with a plastic shim in about thirty seconds. I offered him twenty bucks and he said no, just asked me to hold his dog while he grabbed his own keys from the cab. Ended up chatting for twenty minutes about which parks have the least mud in spring. It was the best bad luck I've had all month, and now I'm stuck on whether I should keep a spare key in a magnetic box under the frame or just buy one of those keychain carabiners that clips to my belt loop. Has anyone else had a stranger rescue them in a dumb moment like that, and did you actually change your routine after?

Forty minutes for a spare key and you're talking about magnetic boxes and carabiners like you had to survive a wilderness ordeal. The guy helped you, you had a nice chat about mud, that's the whole story. People get locked out of cars every single day and they just call AAA and move on with their lives. If anything, the real lesson here is that your wife found it funnier than you did, which should tell you something about how minor this whole thing was. Keep the magnetic box if it makes you feel better, but don't act like this near miss is some kind of call to action.
