Unpopular opinion: Dollar store sponges vs. the expensive kind is a real debate

Honestly I've been going back and forth on this for weeks. I used to buy the cheap 4 pack sponges from the dollar store for like 1.50 and they'd fall apart after 3 days. Then my wife bought the Scrub Daddy ones at the grocery store for 4 bucks each and they lasted a whole month before getting that gross smell. But here's the thing, the dollar store ones actually scrubbed better on my cast iron pan because they were rougher. The fancy ones felt too soft for tough dried on food. So I'm stuck. Do I pay more for something that lasts longer but doesn't clean as good? Or do I go cheap and replace them every few days? Has anyone else dealt with this? What sponges do you guys use for dishes?

Jump right into the other side of the argument you're making. I actually went the opposite route and stocked up on the heavy duty commercial grade sponges from a restaurant supply store. They were like 12 bucks for a 24 pack. Each one lasts me about 10 days before it gets that sour smell, but they're super rough on one side and soft on the other. For my cast iron skillet they work great because that rough side really cuts through the gunk without scratching the seasoning. And since they're so cheap per sponge, I just toss them as soon as they start smelling bad. The only downside is they're not as good for nonstick pans or glassware, so I keep a separate soft sponge for those.

Man that's such a smart move honestly. I've been going back and forth on the whole sponge thing too and it's nice to hear someone else found a system that works for them. The sour smell is the worst, I hate when you grab a sponge and it just hits you with that funky odor. I totally get why you'd just toss them at that point, no point in fighting it. It's cool that you found a cheap bulk option too, makes it easier to not feel bad about replacing them. And keeping separate sponges for different jobs is genius, I've ruined too many nonstick pans using the wrong scrubber.

The real trick is microwaving them wet for two minutes between uses.
