Switched from a big national HVAC company to a local one in Dearborn and saved $200

My office AC went out last July. National company quoted me $1200 to fix a compressor issue. Called a small shop a buddy recommended and they did it for $1000 even. Been 6 months and still running fine. Anyone else find better luck with the smaller crews in metro Detroit?

Read something the other day about how these big chains have crazy overhead. Regional managers, fancy trucks, call center people. My neighbor used one of those national outfits for his furnace and they tried to upsell him a whole new system when all it needed was a blower motor. Local guy fixed it for like 400 bucks. Its the same with my buddy who does plumbing, he says the big companies are just salesman in trucks half the time. That 200 dollar savings sounds about right for what you skip out on with all that corporate stuff.

@jones.angela hit the nail on the head. I had a similar thing happen with my water heater a few years back. Big name company came out and tried to sell me a whole new unit, said it was shot. Local guy replaced a thermocouple for maybe 150 bucks and it's been fine ever since. Always worth getting a second opinion from someone who isn't just trying to upsell you, you know?
