A diesel particulate filter delete job made me question my morals

Last spring, a buddy brought his dump truck in with a clogged filter. He straight up asked me to cut it out and not replace it to save cash. I told him that's illegal and pumps out extra pollution. He got upset, saying his business was slow and he needed the truck running cheap. I held firm and did the full repair, but it cost him a lot. Part of me feels bad for not helping a friend in a tight spot. How do you all deal with these gray area requests from people you know?

When you talked about "gray area requests from people you know," I felt that. My brother once asked me to pass his car inspection even though his check engine light was on. I said no because it screws up the system for everyone. He was pissed, but I explained it's about more than just his wallet. It took time, but he came around and now gets why I have to draw that line. Holding your ground sucks at first, but it keeps your conscience clean.

Honestly the check engine light thing gets me every time. Like, your brother really thought you'd risk your job over what was probably just a loose gas cap he could've fixed for free. Bet that was a fun family dinner after you told him no.
