A new kid called my injector test 'grandpa style' and then his truck would not start
Had a young guy start at my garage off Route 9 in Jersey three weeks ago, and he watched me pop-test a set of injectors with a soda bottle and some clear hose. He laughed and said that was grandpa style, then spent two hours hooking up a $1,200 scan tool to figure out a hard start on a 6.7. Truck still would not fire, so I pulled the return line and showed him the air bubbles in the bottle in about 90 seconds. Sometimes the old dumb trick beats the screen, and I keep that bottle in my box for a reason. Any of you still use the bottle test, or am I the only dinosaur left?
Did the kid even know what he was looking at when you pulled that line though? Because here's the thing nobody talks about, the scan tool only tells you what the computer thinks is happening, it can't see air getting sucked into the fuel. A hard start on a 6.7 with air in the return is a mechanical problem and no amount of live data is gonna show you foam in a line. The bottle trick works because you're actually watching fuel move, not reading a number some sensor spit out. Half these young guys can read a screen but can't tell a good injector from a bad one by feel or sound. That $1,200 tool is great for some stuff but it made him lazy right out of the gate.
