Dropped $260 on a used compression tester and it caught a head gasket before I torqued the head back down
Last month I had a 6.7 Cummins in the bay for what I thought was just a bad EGR cooler, customer kept saying it was eating coolant with no puddle under it. I got the head off, sent it to the machine shop, they said it was flat, and I was about to bolt it back together and call it done. Something nagged at me so I drove over to a guy in Lansing who was selling a used compression tester for $260, one of those good ones with the adapter kit for the 6.7 injector holes. Ran it dry before the head went back on and cylinder 5 came up almost 60 psi low, which told me the block was cracked at the fire ring and the machine shop only checked the head. That $260 tester saved me from doing a full head job twice and burning a Saturday for free, since the customer would've been back in a week. Half the guys I know say the tester just sits in the drawer, but mine has paid for itself three times over now counting that one job. What's the tool you bought that actually caught something big, or the one you regret buying?
