I finally got a look inside a 6.7 Powerstroke after 200k miles with only cheap oil changes.

The turbo vanes were almost stuck solid with soot, and the EGR cooler passages looked like a clogged drain. We switched the owner to a good synthetic and ran some cleaner through it, and after about 5,000 miles the boost response is way better. Has anyone else seen a turnaround like that just from fixing the maintenance routine?

Wouldn't that damage already be done, even with better oil now?

Exactly. It's like fixing a leaky roof after the floor's already ruined. People do this all the time, switching to a healthy diet after a heart attack or finally saving money when they're already broke. The damage is real, but stopping the leak still matters for whatever's left. You can't undo the past, but you can stop making it worse.

Well I'm not so sure it's that dramatic. These engines are built pretty tough and a little soot buildup is normal unless the thing was never driven hard enough to burn it off. Switching to synthetic might help but I'd want to see a tear-down comparison before calling it a major turnaround.
