Just read that a 12-valve Cummins from the 90s could run on straight vegetable oil with almost no changes

I was reading an old forum thread from 2005 about alternative fuels. Someone posted that with just a basic fuel heater and a second tank for diesel to start and stop, you could run those old engines on filtered waste oil. They said the injection pump on those motors was so simple and tough it didn't care. It made me think about how much more complex the new common rail systems are. Has anyone here ever tried running a setup like that, or seen one still working?

Honestly that whole veg oil thing was a real trend for a minute. Tbh my buddy tried it with his old Ford pickup, not a Cummins. He got the oil for free from a fish and chip shop. Ngl the whole truck smelled like french fries forever, which was kind of awesome. But he could never get the filter system right and it kept clogging up. He gave up on it after a few months of messing with it.
