The old timer in Tulsa who told me to quit torquing head bolts in 3 steps
Was doing a head gasket on a 5.9 Cummins last month and this retired diesel guy at the parts counter in Tulsa told me to just torque in one smooth pull to spec instead of the 3-step sequence I learned in tech school. I tried it on a customer truck and it ran fine for two weeks, but now I keep second guessing myself every time I pick up the wrench. Anyone else ever been told to ditch the factory torque sequence or am I getting bad advice from a guy who's been out of the game too long?
