Tried torquing head bolts in 3 passes instead of 5 on a 5.9 Cummins and the results made me rethink my whole routine
Last month I had a 2006 5.9 Cummins in the bay for a head gasket job at my shop here in Toledo, and I decided to try something different with the head bolts. Instead of my usual 5 step torque sequence I did 3 passes like an old timer at the parts counter told me to try, going 50, 90, then the full 125 ft-lbs with the angle gauge. Truck fired up clean, no leaks after 2 weeks of the guy daily driving it, and the head gasket is holding fine. But I keep wondering if I just got lucky or if there's something to this. Any of you guys running fewer torque passes on these Cummins and actually tracking how they hold up long term?
