Choosing between a bold color palette or a muted one for my fantasy city piece
I was working on a digital painting of a floating city and got stuck deciding between a bright, neon palette or a soft, pastel one. After three days of flipping back and forth, I went with the pastels and it gave the whole scene a much more dreamy, calm feeling. Do you usually plan your color schemes from the start or figure them out as you go?

Try the neon palette for the city's underbelly only.

But the city's underbelly is just streets and buildings at night, right? It's not like a secret world. That neon look gets used for everything now, from cafes to car ads. Feels like calling it "the underbelly" makes a normal place seem way more dramatic than it is. Just seems like a style choice, not some deep statement.

Pastels were the right call for a floating city. Neon would have made it look like a cheap arcade game. I wasted a whole week on a cyberpunk bar scene trying to make neon look good before I gave up and switched to a dusty sunset palette. Sometimes the obvious choice is the only one that works.
