Found a shortcut for layer masking after 5 years of digital painting
I always struggled with making clean selections around hair in my portraits. Turns out using the color range tool and then refining with a black brush is way faster than manually painting each strand. Anyone else discover a basic feature way later than they should have?

Isn't manually painting strands the whole point of getting a natural look though? Color range always leaves those choppy halos around the edges on my end, feels like you lose control of the fine detail.

Right, I get what you're saying, but the whole point of having a good color range is that you don't have to paint every single strand by hand to get that natural look. If you're getting those choppy halos, it usually means you're either spraying too close or moving your hand too fast, not that the tool is broken. I've found that dialing down the pressure and doing a super light pass from a bit further away fixes that halo problem completely, then you just do a second pass on the parts that need it. It gives you way more control over the overall shape without having to torture your wrist for an hour.
