I stopped using auto color balance on my landscape shots after a guy at the Grand Canyon pointed at my screen and laughed
I used to run every photo through auto color in Lightroom until a photographer next to me at Mather Point said my sunset looked like a 'neon taco' and he was kind of right. Now I set my white balance in camera before I even take the shot and only tweak the temp slider by hand, and last week I got a print order from a gallery in Flagstaff for two shots. Anyone else feel like auto tools make you forget what colors actually looked like that day?
That neon taco comment at Mather Point would have stung me too, but honestly your story gives me hope. I fell into the same trap with auto white balance for years and my shots all came out looking the same, so hearing that you got two prints into a Flagstaff gallery just by setting it yourself makes me want to finally turn that button off. It really does mess with your memory of what the light actually looked like.
