My first digital sketch in 2008 vs what I made last week, and the gap is not just skill
Back in 2008 I drew on a $60 Wacom Bamboo in Photoshop Elements with a mouse hand cramp and 4 layers max. Last week I finished a piece in Procreate on an iPad with 80 layers and Apple Pencil tilt shading. The jump is not just practice, it is the screen and the pressure curve making every line feel like a real pencil. I pulled up my old file from a folder called "art 2008" and the colors are muddy and the edges are all jagged. The new one took 3 hours and the old one took me 11 hours over 4 days. Anyone else still keep their oldest digital file around just to see the before and after?
Do you still remember the first time you felt that pressure curve click? For me it was switching from a cheap tablet to an iPad in 2019 and suddenly my lines stopped looking like shaky noodles. I kept this old folder called "drawings before 2015" and opening it is wild. My shading back then was just me smudging gray blobs with the mouse, and now tilt shading makes it feel like the pencil is actually leaning into the paper. The time thing hits hard too, I used to spend a whole weekend on one face and now I can bang out something cleaner in an afternoon. It makes you wonder how much was us getting better and how much was just the gear finally keeping up.
