That conversation with my buddy last week about thumbnail contrast really threw me

He pointed out that my latest piece had almost no value separation between the foreground and background on a small screen, and now I can't stop seeing that same mistake in half my gallery - has anyone else had an artist friend drop a simple observation that totally reframed how you review your own work?

Nah, I'm pushing back on this hard. Your buddy's wrong. That high contrast stuff is a crutch. Look at Caravaggio. Sure it works for visibility but it kills mood. My best piece last year had subtle tones throughout. Foreground and background almost blended together on purpose. Got more compliments on that than anything loud. Small screen? People zoom in if they care. Maybe your friend's just jealous you're not following the boring rulebook.
