Watched a Twitch artist paint a whole forest scene with just 3 brushes, made me rethink my 40-brush setup
Last Thursday I was killing time on Twitch and landed on this small channel, maybe 200 viewers, where a guy painted a full misty pine forest in about 2 hours. He used a default round brush, one flat textured brush, and a single scatter brush for the needles. That was it. Meanwhile my Procreate file for a similar scene has 40 brushes in it and I keep bouncing between them like I'm picking cereal at the store. I rewound the VOD twice just to make sure I wasn't missing some secret custom set he loaded offscreen. He wasn't, the brush panel was right there the whole time. So I deleted about 30 brushes off my main canvas and forced myself to do a study with just three, and honestly the piece came out cleaner because I wasn't fussing over texture choices for an hour. Anyone else find that a tiny brush set actually helps, or do you need the big library to feel ready?
Three brushes works fine for that guy because misty pine forests are mostly soft shapes and low contrast, which hides a lot of sins. Try the same trick on a rock pile or wet scales and you will miss every texture brush you tossed. I keep a small core set and a big junk drawer, and the junk drawer earns its keep maybe once a month.
