Compared a $500/month retainer agency to a $200 freelance specialist for our ecommerce site
The big agency sent us generic reports every month, but the freelancer actually dug into our checkout funnel and found a page load issue costing us 15% of conversions. Has anyone else found better results with a smaller specialist over a full service shop?

Did the freelancer actually fix the load issue or just point it out?

The freelancer pointed it out and gave me the fix instructions in plain english. I handed it to my dev guy and it took like 2 hours to sort out. That $200 saved us way more than the $500 agency ever did. The agency just sent me a pretty PDF saying "your site could be faster" which is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. Honestly I think the agency was just good at looking busy while the freelancer actually did the work. Now I joke that my $200 specialist has more brain cells than the whole $500 agency team combined.
