My old boss told me to never take on a client for less than $3k a month
I started my agency two years ago and was desperate for any work, so I ignored him and signed a few clients at $1,500 a month. One of them, a local bakery, was a total nightmare. They wanted daily calls, expected to rank for 'best cupcakes in Chicago' in a month, and asked for endless revisions on every single Facebook ad. I was putting in 25 hours a month for them, which meant I was basically making minimum wage after costs. After six months of this, I finally raised their rate to my minimum. They left, and it was the biggest relief. Now I only work with clients who see the real value and my time is actually worth something. Has anyone else had to learn the hard way about setting a price floor?

Oh man, I learned that lesson the expensive way too. I took on a client for what felt like good money at the time, but then they wanted me to basically be their on-call tech guy for their grandma's printer. I was making less per hour than the kid mowing my lawn. Setting that minimum isn't just about money, it's a filter for crazy.

Filter for crazy" is the perfect way to put it. A low rate just attracts the worst kind of neediness.
