Shoutout to that coffee shop in Austin that gets agency clients

I was in Austin last month visiting a friend who works at a small agency there. We grabbed coffee at this place called Fleet Coffee off Manor Road. I noticed their wifi password was printed on a card that said 'designed by [agency name]' with a link to their site. Talked to the owner and he said the agency did their whole brand for free in exchange for a year of referrals. The owner told me he's sent 7 businesses their way so far just from people asking about the wifi card. It's such a low effort move but it keeps their name in front of everyone who walks through that door. Has anyone else seen a creative local partnership like that actually pay off?

Fleet Coffee did that really smart. I've seen a similar thing in Denver where a bakery let a flower shop use their front counter space for free. The flower shop printed the bakery's name on every sleeve. They shared customers back and forth after that. It paid off way more than either of them expected in my opinion.

Ha, yeah that's a smart setup. I tried something like that once with a local comic shop and a coffee place I used to manage. We put a little shelf of graphic novels by the register and they offered a free drink with every purchase over $20. I ended up hiding behind the counter reading Saga for half my shift instead of actually working. Not sure the partnership was worth it for either of us, but I did get through a lot of comics that month.
