The hostel owner who said 'real work happens in an office' got under my skin

I heard this in Lisbon last week from a guy who runs a 20-bed place while I was trying to fix a client's site with spotty WiFi, so is he right that slow internet and constant distractions make us less serious than folks with desks, or is that just gatekeeping from someone who's never hauled a laptop up a mountain?
