Can we talk about how I gave away 10 years of my life to free apps and only figured it out in a Target parking lot? | Digital Privacy Dilemmas - Opinions Matter
Can we talk about how I gave away 10 years of my life to free apps and only figured it out in a Target parking lot?
I was sitting in my car in Bloomington last month trying to find a coupon and noticed the app wanted my location, contacts, and microphone for a 50 cent discount. My wife asked why the flashlight app needs my camera and I had no answer, so now I just want to know how many of you actually read those permission screens before tapping allow.
The flashlight app asking for your camera is the part that gets me. My dad got one of those free solitaire apps years ago and it somehow ended up with his whole contact list, which we only found out when it tried to invite everyone he knew to play. He never read a single screen, just hit allow on whatever popped up because the game was free and he wanted to play cards. Took me an hour to go through his phone settings and shut all that stuff off. Now every time I download something I sit there squinting at the permissions like a paranoid weirdo, but at least I know what I'm giving up.
