Hit 500 unknown devices on my home network in 3 months

I ran a scan last week and found 500 random devices pinging my router. Most were smart bulbs and plugs my roommate added without telling me. Has anyone else had their smart home secretly balloon like that?

Holy crap, 500 devices? That's insane. Honestly, I thought I was bad with 15 smart plugs but that's a whole different level. Did your roommate put a smart toaster in the kitchen or something?

500 devices is overkill for sure, I'd argue most of that stuff is just adding extra points of failure in your network. Your roommate basically turned the apartment into a server farm, and I'd bet half those devices are smart bulbs nobody asked for or sensors that report data nobody looks at. From what I've seen, keeping it simple with a handful of reliable devices gives you 90% of the convenience without that headache of updating firmware on a smart toaster. A smart toaster would still be a waste of money in my experience, but to be fair, it's one thing most people could probably skip altogether.
