Hotspot sharing made my work laptop a target in 48 hours

I used my phone hotspot for a client file transfer in Portland and by the next morning my work email got a login alert from another state. Turns out the open network I joined had a fake portal, and I never checked the certificate. Has anyone else seen account takeover right after using a public hotspot on a work device?
