I finally deleted my old Facebook account from 2008
I had that account for over 15 years, full of old photos and messages. The choice was simple: keep it for the memories or delete it for peace of mind. I picked deleting it. It felt strange, like throwing away a photo album, but I was tired of the data collection. I downloaded my data first, which was a 2GB file, and then pulled the plug. It's been three months and I don't miss the targeted ads or the old drama. Has anyone else felt that mix of relief and nostalgia after a big digital cleanup?

That sounds like a huge mistake to be honest. Those old accounts are digital time capsules you can't get back. The targeted ads are a small price to pay for keeping a direct line to your past self and the people you've lost touch with. That downloaded file is just cold data, not the same as the living timeline. In a few years you might really regret not having that easy window into who you used to be. Peace of mind is temporary, but losing those memories is permanent.

I mean, I get the worry, but I deleted my old Facebook years ago and never looked back. That downloaded file actually helped me remember the good stuff without the daily noise. Idk, maybe it's just me but holding onto every single post started to feel heavy. The peace of mind from knowing it's all gone for good was worth way more than a few random memories popping up. I don't miss the timeline at all.

Two gigabytes of data from one account? That's a shocking amount of information for them to have on you. It really shows how much they were keeping track of, which makes deleting it seem even more reasonable. The idea of all that just sitting there forever is pretty unsettling. I'd probably make the same choice just based on that number alone.
