I finally deleted my old Nextdoor account after a neighborhood watch post went too far

Someone posted a grainy photo of a person walking their dog at night, asking if anyone knew them because they looked 'suspicious'. It was just my neighbor, Frank, who works the night shift. Made me realize how quickly a local app can turn into a digital witch hunt. Has anyone else pulled back from these hyper-local groups because of privacy worries?

Better safe than sorry with real crime happening.

You hit the nail on the head calling it a digital witch hunt. I left my local Facebook group for the same reason. Someone posted a photo of a guy checking car door handles, but it was just a neighbor looking for his lost cat. That kind of post can ruin a person's reputation over nothing. These groups make people think every stranger is a threat. It creates more fear than it does safety. I decided my peace of mind was worth more than the gossip.

Totally agree with you. I saw a post in my town's group where someone snapped a picture of an old man sitting on a park bench just watching people. Turned out he was waiting for his granddaughter to get out of school... but the comments were already calling him a creep and saying to call the cops. It's like once someone posts a photo, everyone loses their mind and assumes the worst. I noped out of that group real quick after that.
