My hardware store clerk warned me about smart locks and I should've listened

Last month at the Ace Hardware on Elm Street, the old guy behind the counter told me those smart locks are basically just giving a stranger a key to your house if they hack the app. I installed one anyway and two weeks later got a notification that someone tried to log into my account from a city three states away. Has anyone else had a close call with smart home gear that made you rethink the convenience?

Used to think the paranoid types were just scared of progress but after my Ring camera got spoofed I totally get it now. Had some dude in another country talking to my kids through the speaker and it freaked me out bad enough I unplugged the whole thing. These companies push convenience but security feels like an afterthought til something happens.
