Picked signal over whatsapp after my cousin got spoofed

She lost access to her whole account for three days because someone cloned her number. Has anyone else jumped to a different messaging app after a close call?

My coworker went through something similar with WhatsApp last year. She woke up one morning to find her account logged out on her phone and her friends were getting weird messages from "her" asking for money. Turned out someone spoofed her SIM card at the carrier store by pretending to be her. It took her four days to get it sorted out with support and the carrier. After that she switched to signal too and hasn't looked back since. The extra security is worth the hassle of getting everyone else to switch over.

SIM swap attacks are getting way too common now. I've had friends hit by this exact thing and learned the hard way that carrier PIN codes are basically useless if the store employee doesn't check ID properly. Best move is to contact your carrier and set a specific note on your account that no SIM changes happen without a photo ID and a callback to your number first.
