An electrician in Dayton showed me a $4 outlet tester that found the loose neutral my $200 meter missed
I always figured cheap tools were a waste of money until my buddy who does commercial work in Dayton pulled out a $4 receptacle tester and found a loose neutral in my kitchen that my fancy $200 multimeter had been reading as fine. I ran that little thing around my whole house and it caught two more outlets with swapped hot and neutral that could have fried my fridge. Has anyone else had a cheap tool just embarrass the expensive one sitting in your bag?
A $4 tester is basically a fancy night light that tells you if power is there. It can't measure voltage drop or tell you if a neutral is loose under load, so of course your multimeter "missed" it, it wasn't even testing for that. Swapped hot and neutral isn't gonna fry your fridge either, most appliances don't care which side the hot is on.
