Just realized how much a simple attic fan can actually save you on cooling costs
I was reading an old energy guide from my utility company and it said a properly sized attic fan can cut your AC use by up to 30% in the summer. I always thought they were just for moving hot air, not a real money saver. Has anyone actually installed one and seen a drop in their bill?

Yeah my neighbor swears by his, but @casey843 has a point about the payback time.

30% sounds like a huge claim, where's the proof? I feel like those utility guides always push the best case scenario to get you to buy stuff. Wouldn't you need a perfectly sealed house and perfect insulation for that to even work? I'm not convinced the fan cost and install gets paid back that fast.

Did you look into whether your attic has enough vents for the fan to actually pull fresh air through? I put one in a few years ago and my electric bill dropped about 40 bucks a month in the summer, which covered the fan cost within a year. My house isn't perfectly sealed either, but the fan definitely takes the edge off on those real hot afternoons.
