My dad insisted I use 3-inch deck screws for a cedar planter box, but after a year in Seattle rain, the wood split. He says it's the cedar's fault, I think it was the screws.

Man, I used to grab whatever screws were cheapest for outdoor stuff. Then I built a planter box with some basic zinc ones. They were totally orange with rust by the next spring, and the wood started to split. Now I only buy the coated deck screws, and nothing has fallen apart in years. What brand did you end up using?

Cheap fasteners are such a waste of money and time. You end up doing the job twice when they fail. That rust stains the wood and ruins the whole project. Spending a bit more upfront saves so much headache later. It's one of those lessons you only have to learn once.
