My dad was over helping me fix a loose cabinet door and said 'you know, we used to just use a matchbook to shim these things'.

Oh man, my dad says stuff like that too. But honestly, a matchbook shim feels like a temporary fix that just comes loose again. I'd rather take the extra minute to use a proper wooden shim.

Actually a matchbook shim done right holds up fine for years. The trick is to fold it tight and tap it in flush. People just do it wrong and then blame the method.

Yeah true, but a matchbook shim is more about convenience than longevity. If you're working on something that needs to stay put for a while, just grab a proper shim and call it done. Have you ever tried the plastic ones? They're cheap and don't crumble like wood.
