My neighbor's one comment about my deck stain changed how I prep wood

Last spring I was out staining my back deck and my neighbor Bob walked over and said "you're going to regret not sanding those railings first." I brushed him off but six months later the stain on those railings peeled right off. Now I always hit the whole surface with 80-grit before any stain job and it's made a huge difference. Anyone else ever ignore good advice and pay for it later?

Honestly, sanding everything with 100-grit before paint saved my fence.

100 grit on a fence sounds like overkill to me honestly.
