Paid $220 for a smart thermostat, my heating bill went UP

Bought one of those fancy smart thermostats last fall because everyone said it would pay for itself. Installed it in about an hour, app setup was easy, but the thing kept cranking the heat whenever I was home because it thought I wanted 72 degrees. The schedule I set kept getting overridden by its 'learning' mode, so it was basically doing whatever it wanted. My December bill came in at $164, about $30 more than the same month last year with my old dumb thermostat. Finally turned off the learning feature and set a plain manual schedule, and now it's basically a normal thermostat with a nice screen. Has anyone else had a smart home gadget that made things worse instead of better?

Turning off the learning mode was the fix for me too, it just ignores everything you set.
