Talked to my grandma about painting and she flipped my whole approach
She's 78 and still paints her own kitchen cabinets. I was bragging about using painter's tape and fancy angled brushes. She just laughed and said real painters learn to cut in freehand with a stiff brush. Said it's faster and you get better lines once you practice. She made me try it on a scrap board and honestly my edges looked cleaner than when I tape. Made me think maybe we overcomplicate stuff with all these gadgets when the old way still works fine. Anybody else got a family member who humbled them on a basic DIY skill?

That freehand thing is a total game changer once you get the hang of it.

Facts. That first week feels weird but once your muscle memory kicks in it's SO worth it. I started by practicing on scrap cuts before doing anything important. Big tip: keep your cutting hand relaxed and let the tool do the work, tight grip makes it way harder to stay smooth.

Wait did your buddy almost slice their finger off trying to freehand without practicing first? My friend Mike tried to jump straight into cutting a curve on actual plywood and ended up with a wobbly mess that looked more like a jagged lightning bolt.
